The Fountain

"Death is a diesease and there's a cure, and I will find it."

What man fears the most is the unknown. Those things that we are not able to explain are the ones that pose the biggest threats, the ones that we dread the most, and the ones that can cause the most pain. Among these things, death stands out as the biggest mystery man has ever faced. Therefore, we fear death the most. Religion, philosophy, literature, science and art have all tried to find and answer to the infinite question on the afterlife. Some have turned out to be romantic, other hopeful, many tragic and some other adventurous yet, all are surrounded by mysticism.

However, man's fear tends to exceed any kind of hope. Death is regarded as the end. After all, everything we know, experience, feel and love is life. Our most valuable possession is life itself, we are life. Why not hold to it? Why not preserve it as long as we can? What if you could live forever?

This is the question posed by The Fountain, and the result is a beautiful story, a true symphony of moments both real and mystic. Darren Aronofsky has put together a complex philosophycal film, full of questions, symbolisms, magic and poetry. An intense exploration on life and death, on love and immortality.

The movie is one of the best filmic experiences I have ever had. Shadowy precious photography, passionate and compelling performances (Jackman and Weisz as I could have never imagined them), and an the most intense soundtrack ever (Mansell and Kronos even better than in Requiem), all together, make up a truly artistic masterpiece, a cinematic poem worth reciting over and over, not to give us the answers to the unknown but to remind us of the beauty of life and the possibilities therein.

Been borderline histeric wanting to see it for over a month now. Worldwide premiere was November 22--seems worldwide doesn't include Mexico. At Cinepolis they haven't even heard of it. BitTorrent tempts me...

(There was a long, great article on the movie on Wired btw, don't miss it!)
